The 10th annual South African Food & Wine Festival

What started in 2006 as a modest local festival has grown into a successful grass-roots cultural event attended by thousands of visitors from Virginia, the Mid-Atlantic states and as far away as New York and Florida.  This event is substantially different from the familiar offerings of Wine Festival, Food Festival and Concert by:
  • Combining the three concepts and keeping all elements of the festival - including wine, vendors, and entertainment - authentic, rare, exceptional, and world-class
  • Courting and cultivating a demographic of savvy wine, food, and travel enthusiasts within a discriminate target of desired age range and income with a focus on cultural diversity
  • Fulfilling a commitment to use local services and products to produce the event, the South African Food & Wine Festival brings in over $250,000 a year to the local economy, supporting local businesses such as The Country Vintner (wine importer/distributor,) hotels, caterers, event rental agencies, photographers, print shops, sound engineers and more

The South African Food & Wine Festival reaches a high-value audience of over 10,000 who are…

  • Educated, affluent, media-savvy, connected, and trend-setters
  • Share a passion to be the first for new cultural experiences through food, wine, and art
  • Mostly 35 – 56 age demo with average household income of $200,000
  • Hold leadership roles in business and community
  • Reflect the cultural diversity of the Central and Northern Virginia region

Your company can benefit from....
  • Access to a vibrant social media network of over 10,000 people who stay in touch with Grayhaven Winery via Opt-In email, Facebook, and Twitter
  • Visibility on GrayhavenWinery.com and SouthAfricanFoodFest.com, where visitors from near and far go to learn about the winery, winery events and, of course, the acclaimed South African Food & Wine Festival
  • Targeted media campaign for print, radio and online with strategic advertising including such outlets as Richmond Times-Dispatch, Wall Street Journal, Virginia This Morning, WRIC-TV, NPR, Richmond Magazine, and Washington Post
  • Additional promotional outreach includes poster and postcard placement as well as targeted direct mailing and email blasts in the areas of Richmond, Charlottesville, and Washington, DC
  • On-site presence throughout the festival through banners and other promotional opportunities

Visitors to The South African Food & Wine Festival experience a unique cultural event in a beautiful pastoral setting. Sampling South African wines, meeting and chatting with South African winemakers, tasting the authentic dishes of South Africa, shopping for South African imported goods and listening to an amazing line-up of South African performers are all part of this annual two-day festival.Virginia, of course, is well represented, from the estate-grown Virginia wines of Grayhaven to the unmistakable Southern hospitality of the winery and the 150 festival volunteers who hail from as near as Staunton, VA to as far away as Soweto, SA.

Volunteers

South African Wines

Hand selected by the Grayhaven winemakers, the wines showcased at The South African Food & Wine Festival demonstrate the depth and breadth of South Africa’s contribution to the world of wines. Rare gems, limited releases, national debuts, and boutique offerings along with iconic wines set this event apart from any other South African wine event. Samplings of typical South African varietals such as Pinotage, Chenin Blanc, and Sauvignon Blanc, as well as unusual offerings (such as Springfield Estates Wild Yeast Chardonnay) dazzle wine enthusiasts under the main wine tent.  Grayhaven’s Virginia wines are also showcased.

VIP Cellar

An exclusive wine tasting for VIPs

The VIP Cellar offers samples and sales of premium South African and Grayhaven’s Virginia wines (some retailing for over $65/bottle) to visitors who have purchased at least $75 of wines in the main festival wine tent. This approach is the cornerstone of the festival’s reputation as the premiere showcase of South African wines in the United States, drawing wine enthusiasts from as far away as New York, California, and Florida.

The Cuisine of South Africa

Just as varied as its cultures, the cuisine of South Africa is like no other, combining the influences of Africa, India, Southeast Asia, and Europe. Also known as “rainbow cuisine,” world-renowned biltong jerky, Boerewors sausage, chutneys, curries, Peri-Peri sauce, exotic spices mixes, and more are offered throughout the festival. The South African Food & Wine Festival, as well as Grayhaven Winery, has developed a loyal following of influential chefs, culinary journalists, and “foodies” from around the country. The festival has garnered attention from magazines such as Bon Appetite and its recipes have appeared in national publications such as Chile Pepper Magazine.

South African Entertainment

JuxtaPower, based in New York, returns with amazing performances of both traditional and modern South African music, dance, and theater. Led by Sduduzo Ka-Mbili, JuxtaPower sets the mood of the festival with riveting rhythmic and acrobatic dance interwoven with melodic folk music, stories, history, and humor. The dynamic line-up of talent includes South African dancers, singers, drummers, and storytellers from all corners of the nation including Soweto, Engonyameni, Durban, Pretoria, and Kimberley.

South African Market – Only offering products from South Africa or from South African vendors, festival attendees explore Southern Africa through its crafts, packaged foods & spices, and clothing. The marketplace offers unique products rarely available in the U.S. The variety and quality of the offerings and the market’s enchanting host, Dumisile Nxumalo Martin, welcome visitors to a taste of South Africa reminiscent of the wonderful outdoor markets of Johannesburg’s Rosebank Market and Cape Town’s Green Market Square.

Family

Family Friendly

The South African Food & Wine Festival continues to retain and grow its targeted audience of families, empty-nesters and affluent retirees.  The mix of age diversity and cultural diversity add to the character of the event itself.  South African Airways sites the quality of the festival’s attendees as the number one reason they support the event every year as a sponsor.

Grayhaven Winery

The South African Food & Wine Festival is hosted by Grayhaven Winery, a 20-year-old boutique farm winery centrally located in Gum Spring, Virginia – just 30 minutes west of Richmond, 45 minutes east of Charlottesville, and 2 hours south of Washington D.C.  The winery is owned and operated by the Peple & Abrams family who enjoy sharing the creativity, history and hospitality of their Virginia and South African heritage.
